Date and apartment

If the birthday falls on a weekday, decide whether you will celebrate that same night or move it to the weekend. Timing

The most fragile moment of a surprise is the first entrance into the apartment. To set things up you need to be there before your partner. Check-in is from 14:00; if you want to get in earlier, ask in advance, as early check-in is arranged subject to availability. If the two of you are arriving at different times, mention that when you book as well.

If you want to celebrate at midnight, another option is to spend the evening out and come back close to midnight.

The excuse

Find a natural reason to bring your partner to the apartment:

• A short weekend escape in the city
• Dinner in Bakırköy, then a walk on the seafront
• Seeing a place a friend recommended, together

Keep the excuse light and something that will make your partner smile, so you can both laugh easily when the surprise comes out.

ID

In Türkiye, every guest's identity details are reported by law at accommodation properties; at check-in each guest needs a passport, and Turkish citizens can show a T.C. identity card instead. This is one of the small details that most often trips up a surprise. Make sure your partner brings their passport without tipping them off.

Tips for your own setup

• Cake: Pick it up close to the celebration. Bakeries and cafés are among the options around the bazaar and the main street in the centre.
• Light: Use battery LED candles instead of real candles to light the apartment.
• Decorations: Choose decorations that are quick to clear away, such as balloons, a photo line or a birthday banner.

• Carrying: The building has an elevator, so balloons, gifts and the cake box are easy to take upstairs.
• Music: A short playlist on your phone is enough; keep the volume respectful of neighbours.

If you want to celebrate exactly at midnight, try this order:

1. Finish dinner early, then take a short walk on the seafront or along İstanbul Caddesi.
2. Finish the setup before you go out for the evening, so that on your return all you need to do is switch on the lights.
3. Come back a little before midnight; keep the cake and the card ready in the living room.
4. Keep music and celebration noise low, in keeping with the late hour.

After the celebration in the apartment

The next morning you can have birthday breakfast at a café around the square. Check-out is by 11:00; if you would like to stay longer, ask about late check-out in advance.

How many people will join the celebration?

The 1+1 apartment sleeps 2–3 and the 1+0 studio apartment 1–2. For a bigger family celebration you can ask about the same property's two-bedroom apartment (2+1) for 4–5 guests. A large celebration with a group of friends is easier to plan at a venue outside. Ask about things such as a guest who is not staying dropping by when you book as well.
